Being born and raised in New
York City, I had the immense good fortune of being in close proximity to some
of the world’s greatest art museums.
I recall my sense of awe and excitement as
I first wandered the halls of the Museum of Modern Art. It was here that I was
first exposed to the paintings of Miro, DeKooning, Motherwell, Pollack, and
Picasso. My response to painting is, and continues to be, an emotional and
intuitive one.
In addition to being inspired by the great museums, New York’s
frenetic nature and unparalleled architectural monumentalism had a profound
impact on my aesthetic sensibility.
My life as an artist began with an incessant impulse to draw and doodle. To this
day, I can’t get through a phone conversation without scratching images on a
notepad or desk calendar. I am a fidgety and restless person; and the move to
painting was a natural one.
I began painting at the San Francisco School of Art
in the early 1990s under the direction of Bay Area painter Roy Tomlinson. I
continued my studies at Humboldt State University in Northern California where
I
was awarded the Berry Painting award for First Prize at the Juried Show. I
returned to New York City where I attended the Arts Student League and continued
my studies of painting and design.
During the past 15 years, my work has evolved through the use of new tools,
techniques, influences, and life experience. I work primarily with oil sticks
and acrylic paint and utilize both canvas and wood. My paintings have been sold
to private collections in Chicago, IL, Bismarck, ND, Victoria, BC, Oakland, CA,
and New York. My work has been exhibited in New York City, San Francisco, CA,
Oakland, CA, Humboldt County, CA, and now Portland Oregon. |
